Ramadan in Asaita Afar: A Humanitarian Milestone for Eritrean Refugees

During the holy month of Ramadan, the Eritrean Humanitarian Organisation (EHO) proudly led a vital relief initiative in the Asaita region of Afar, Ethiopia. This project, independently managed by EHO, marks a significant achievement in our mission to stand with Eritrean refugees—especially in communities where urgent needs often go unmet. With $10,000 USD (1,470,000 Ethiopian Birr), EHO reached over 600 refugee households, supporting the wellbeing of approximately 2,531 individuals. Through careful planning and responsible spending, we were able to make a meaningful impact with a relatively modest budget. Beginning the week of April 1st, EHO staff members travelled from Mekelle and Addis Ababa to oversee the delivery of aid. Despite extreme heat and challenging conditions, our team worked with diligence, compassion, and professionalism to ensure the success of this project.

This initiative holds special significance, as it bridged a critical humanitarian gap. In the absence of consistent support from major humanitarian actors, EHO stepped in to reach the most vulnerable members of the Eritrean refugee community. Our distribution included:

  • Elderly individuals
  • Single mothers
  • Children
  • People with disabilities
  • Ten refugees living with HIV

The delivery of this aid, timed during Ramadan and Eid, brought a renewed sense of dignity and solidarity to the community. Many of the recipients shared heartfelt thanks, highlighting the emotional and spiritual importance of receiving this support during such a meaningful time.

This was the first initiative of its kind for the Eritrean community in Asaita. The response from beneficiaries—captured in the testimonial videos—speaks volumes about the difference this effort made.

With over 15,000 Eritrean refugees still living in the Asaita camp, the needs remain immense. But this project proves that impact is possible, even without large-scale backing. EHO remains committed to continuing this vital work, and we invite others to stand with us in bridging the gap where others cannot or have yet to reach.
